Cleaning Down Sleeping Bags

If you’re anything like me, you make it a priority to go on multiple camping trips each year. Even though the summer months are the most conducive to an extended stay in the wilderness, but autumn camping offers a host of different pleasures: the flora and fauna take on a whole new character. In cold weather I always bring along a down sleeping bag, and afterward I make sure to clean it thoroughly.

These sleeping bags require scrupulous care, at least if you want to extend the life of your considerable investment. Begin by wiping the bag with a damp cloth. Then place the bag inside a front-loading washer and clean with mild detergent. Keep the bag inside for an extra rinse cycle to ensure that all of the soap is removed. Finally place the bag in the dryer and set it to the lowest heat setting. Include a few towels in the drying cycle as well; they should soak up some of the moisture. Be prepared to wait a few hours for the bag to dry entirely.
