Goose Down Bags

November 2, 2009

41B1BHDC81L._SL210_

    Identification

  1. Down is another name for the interior feathers on a bird, of which goose down is by far the most popular for sleeping bags.
  2. Types

  3. The quality of the down is primarily determined by the maturity of the bird. Older birds have better quality of down. Some of the best goose down sleeping bags comes from West Asia, some of the poorest from East Asia.
  4. Warning

  5. While down sleeping bags have excellent breath ability, their insulating value decreases tremendously when they get wet. For this reason, it is a good idea to purchase a sleeping bag with a waterproof liner if you are going to use it in damp climates.
  6. Features

  7. Natural goose down is still the best insulating material available because it offers the more warmth for the weight than any synthetic material. Goose down gives approximately three times more warmth for the weight than synthetic fibers.
  8. Considerations

  9. Down is carefully washed and cleaned using special machinery to ensure the feathers are completely sanitized and non hypoallergenic.

Transportation

Mummy sleeping bags are meant to be packed into stuff sacks, which are usually supplied with the bag. Slide the main zipper of the bag about three-quarters open, then stuff it into the sack. If your bag is down sleeping bags, keep it away from liquids and protect it in a waterproof bag (or garbage bag in a pinch) if it rains.

Care of Your Sleeping Bag

Sleeping bags should be stored dry and loose, not in the stuff sack. They also need to be washed periodically, preferably by hand, with mild soap or specially formulated sleeping bag wash. Help keep the bag clean on the outside by using a clean pad, and on the inside by wearing extra layers to bed or by using a sleeping bag liner. Note that both of these options will add to the warmth rating of the bag.

Good Qualily Sleeping Bags

October 30, 2009

x17919815The best sleeping bag is not found in a wholesale supermarket like Wal-mart. Sure, you can save a lot money by buying bags from supermarkets, but you will lose out on quality. It is always worth it to sacrifice large sums of money for quality.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a sleeping bag. The last thing you want when going for a vacation is to have sleepless nights due to cold weather. A low quality sleeping bag will guarantee you just that.

You might be taking a trip to the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, Montana or the Glacier National Park. Make sure that you choose the right bag A good lightweight sleeping bags will be the trick to go camping. It will be lighter if you are going hiking on your trip. 31eFTaQI0bL._SL210_When you’re camping, one object you should certainly carry with you is a sleeping bag. No matter where you might be going, whether it’s in the forest or up the mountain, you should ensure that you have a sleeping bag with you. Sleeping bags are not only providers of comfort, they serve a much more crucial purpose, and this is to give insulation. You’ll be shocked at how cold it can get during the night when you’re in the wild. Warmth becomes a very important commodity. And a sleeping bag with nice insulation may just become your best friend during the cold evenings. But there are two types of sleeping bags to pick from, one is the down sleeping bag and the other one has synthetic filling. These are the insulation they put in the sleeping bag. So look for the best insulation that keeps warm during cold night.

31LIZ6TpeXL._SL125_I believe this would depend on the size of your washer and the size of your sleeping bag! Have you checked the sleeping bag over for tags that might give washing instructions? If you have a large capacity washer, you should be OK. Try putting the sleeping bag inside the washer without any water in it to see how well it fits. If it looks like it does, then you should be able to wash the sleeping bag like you would a comforter, on regular cycle. When drying the sleeping bag, use dryer balls or buy some new tennis balls to put in the dryer with the sleeping bag; this will help to move the sleeping bag around in the dryer so that every part will get dry. This is how to take care of a goose down sleeping bag.

Buying For Cold Weather

October 15, 2009

Brand New High Peak Extreme Pak 0 Degree Mummy Light Weight Camping/sleeping Bag with Dura Loft

It’s a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That’s why it’s smart to buy a bag that’s rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10.

Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers’ temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you’re the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that’s rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for “warm” sleepers–a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night
